Raised in a small coal mining community in western Pennsylvania, I couldn't decide if I wanted to pitch for the Pittsburgh Pirates or become a writer. My tryout with the Pirates hit a dead end when a scout lamented, "Son, if you can't throw a baseball through the side of a barn, we don't want you." I won a national short story writing contest at 16 and have been selling my material ever since. He lives in Springfield, Missouri.
