Strike up Some Senior Silliness Before Your Next Round Birthday

By Roberta Beach Jacobson

Be greeted by sunshine every morning to maintain a sunny personality. Tape a cheerful paper sun to your bedroom window or blinds.

You don't have to join the circus to find fun. Here are some light-hearted suggestions on what to do before you turn six-oh, seven-oh or whatever-oh.

Dig out your high school yearbooks and check out the hairstyles. Enjoy a few giggles.

Discover your artistic talents by creating your own holiday cards. Use construction paper, cut up bits of magazines (maybe some old photographs) and paste away. You can work on this all year long, making several cards a month whenever the mood strikes.

Take a class in something fascinating. Check out your community center or local adult education program.

Dream in color. Mix (rather than match) your sheets and pillowcases to create a rainbow in your bedroom.

Declutter a little the end of every month and donate the results to charity. Clean out your unwanted shoes, your old LPs or tapes, another time your stacks of magazines.

Look in the back of your kitchen cupboard for that forgotten coffee mug and rediscover an old friend.

Next time you order personal checks, search for a different motif. Beach scenes with palm trees? Vibrant cartoon characters? Classic cars?

When you meet friends for dinner, try something out of the ordinary. Korean cuisine? Indian? Greek?

Volunteer at your library to read stories to eager kids. Story time is a win-win!

Trade chores/share skills with friends and neighbors. Maybe you love to bake pies, but don't know how to check your car's oil and brake fluid or measure the air in the tires.

Try making a few gifts instead of buying everything at the store. Use your imagination. Can you paint a silk necktie for your brother? Knit a scarf for your best friend? String beads for your granddaughter?

If you're fortunate enough to have hair, consider a new hairstyle the next time you get a trim.

Everybody collects something. Whatever is near and dear to your heart, be it a row of dolls or a jar of beach pebbles, let everyone see. Why keep the “fun stuff” packed away in boxes in the basement or garage?

Don't wait for Halloween to wear a silly hat.

Visit your local animal shelter to find out about adopting an older dog or cat. Hey, why should you be the most senior member of your household?

Reconnect with high school, college or military buddies – via Facebook or other social networks.

Eat your veggies (and fruits) and give a silent thanks to Mother Nature. Try not to reward your beautiful self with only chocolate or salty junk.

If your budget won't let you travel far, stock up on travel guides from the library or subscribe to travel magazines. Surf the Internet to learn more about your dream spots.

You aren't dining on your fancy china or using your family's silverware? Why not? What good is it doing stored away in your cabinet or attic? Unwrap whatever you've got and enjoy.
